Short-Term Disability (STD) for CA, HI, NJ, NY, and RI employees

When You Can Enroll
This insurance is automatically deducted from your paycheck as a payroll tax for a state-mandated benefit.

Voluntary STD for employees not in CA, HI, NJ, NY, and RI

When You Can Enroll
Enroll anytime, subject to insurance carrier approval. When you elect voluntary STD anytime other than within 31 days of your date of hire, evidence of insurability is required.

What to Know

• This benefit replaces part of your income for an extended period of time if you are unable to work due to a covered illness or injury.
• Covers 60% of your weekly income, up to a maximum benefit of $1,764 per week. The weekly benefit may be reduced or offset by other sources of income.
• Unum is the Voluntary STD provider.

Basic Long-Term Disability (LTD)

When You Can Enroll
You are automatically enrolled in this benefit – no action required.

What to Know

• This policy provides you with coverage that replaces up to 40% of your regular salary after six months of an eligible disability, up to the maximum specified in the policy.
• This is provided to you at no-cost by Caltech.

Supplemental LTD

When You Can Enroll
Enroll anytime, subject to insurance carrier approval. When you elect supplemental LTD anytime other than within 31 days of your date of hire, evidence of insurability is required.

What to Know

• You can add this benefit that supplements the Basic LTD policy.
• This supplemental policy adds an additional benefit of 20% of your regular salary, so you receive a total benefit equal to 60% of your regular salary, up to the maximum specified in the policy.
• Cost: $0.137 for each $100 basic monthly earnings (which is the fixed amount of money paid to you, excluding the deductions such as tax contributions and additions).
  • For example: If your basic month earnings are $2,000, your monthly cost for Supplemental STD is $2.74 [($2,000/$100) X $0.137 = $2.74]/int
